Sherrill Milnes, one of the most prominent baritones of his day, was born into a farming family in the American mid-West in 1935. After graduating from college, he decided to become an opera singer. He started his operatic career singing roles in English with Boris Goldovsky's Opera Theater. In 1965 he debuted at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City in the role of Valentin in Charles Gounod's Faust. He continued a strong association with that company until the mid-1990s. He also sang in most of the other prominent opera houses in the world. Milnes especially excelled in Verdi baritone roles, such as Germont, Macbeth, Luisa Miller, and many others. He currently devotes much of his time to teaching young singers.
